Arriving there he is walking along the dock when he sees a simple fisher girl waiting in the porch of a hut for her father. Old Joe, a fisherman, passes and nods to Jack. Old Joe is on his boat in the docks and finds his man, Jim, asleep. He is tired of his lazy ways, awakes him and discharges him. Jack overhears the conversation and applies for the job which Joe gives him. Jim is angry and tries to prevent Jack from entering the boat, but Jack knocks him down and leaves him on the sand threatening vengeance. Jack and Joe return and Joe points out a boarding house where Jack can stay, he engages a room and starts to go upstairs, but is tripped up by a drunken sailor. A fight commences while Jim, who has planned it, looks on. Jack has fallen in love with Peggy, but she does not approve of his quarrelsome ways, although she likes him. One day he is walking along the cliffs and falls over; he is seriously hurt and is carried to the cottage where Peggy and her father live, where she nurses him back to health, and gradually gets to care for him. Peggy's father is an invalid and dies suddenly leaving Peggy all alone. Jack, returning from his work, learns of her father's death and is told that Peggy is on the cliff: he goes to find her and, holding out his arms, she goes to him.
- October 1942 - July 1943. The inherent strength of the Allies begins to be felt. Canadian munitions factories operate at peak capacity. The R.C.A.F. joins in air strikes against Germany.
- Tom Walters pays court to Nell, the old fisherman's daughter. Though Tom is honest and of their own people, Nell's father objects to him as a son-in-law; he hopes to canceling a note to his old friend Clem Masters by marrying his daughter off to him. However, he keeps the fact of his debt to Masters a secret. One day Tom learns of his sweetheart's father's financial embarrassment. He offers the old man his own savings, but is refused and ordered away. Tom places the matter before Nell. She finally consents to allow him to take the note from its hiding place under the seat of an old chair and pay it off. By this unselfish act on Tom's part, she hopes to gain her father's consent. After paying the note Tom returns to find no one home; he places the note, receipted, back in its place, planning to tell her about it later. As he leaves the house, however, the father observes him and asks questions, but Tom refuses to explain his presence there. In a rage the old man draws a gun on him and fires. Tom is wounded in the head and loses his memory; he cannot even remember the note's hiding place. About this time a man and his daughter arrive from the city. The girl takes a fancy to the boy and plays with his affections. Tom, having forgotten his first sweetheart, believes the butterfly loves him. She encourages this belief, and when she leaves Tom follows her to the city. Once in the city Tom learns the truth, that it was only a pass time for the girl, that he was only her plaything. All this time the little fishermaid remains true to his memory. Tom turns to business. He works with a might and becomes successful. Then comes the desire to return, to see again the old place by the sea. On the day of his return there is a terrific storm at sea. The "girl" is out in it; her boat is overturned. The town people look on, afraid to venture out to the rescue. Tom comes on the scene just in the nick of time. He effects a rescue and carries the "girl" in his arms to her father's house. He places her in the old armchair. The bottom drops out, disclosing the hiding place of the forgotten note, receipted. The discovery causes a return of memory. Tom recognizes the "girl." The old home is saved and the father, realizing what he has done, forgives.
- PC Rowan gets assigned to special duty with the CID in Whitby. He will be investigating reports of smuggling among the local fishermen. Ventress is asked to help him, but unlike Rowan he has to pay all expenses by himself since he is on holiday. Rowan's main suspect is Cedric Shanks, but to get close to him Rowan needs the help of young Jake Stirling, who is in dire need of a job because he has gotten his girlfriend Liza pregnant. Blaketon takes over Rowan's patch while he is away and uses the opportunity to keep an eagle eye on Claude Jeremiah Greengrass.
